Try an omni like an Earthworks QTC-1. It sounded crazy to me the first time it was recomended to me, but it was the keeper for that song.

For the price of a U87 you could get a complete mic locker. In the 3000 price range, something by Gefell, Blue, Brauner, or Soundelux would most likely be a better choice. With so many companies making quality mics nowadays, I see no reason anyone should ever buy a (new) U87.
