Cab IR's -vs- an EQ in the effects loop

Overall, my experience with impulse responses so far has been pretty good. But it seems that they only give an accurate representation of a cab when the result hasn't been EQ'd yet, and when the raw sound going in has not been EQ'd either...Meaning the flatter the EQ curve, the more it sounds...

Amplitube's Distortion is rather "Honky" sounding...

See, that's just it...Whenever I turn the gain down slightly, my tone just loses its balls, if you know what I mean. Even triple and quad tracking don't help that. There is also a phenomenon I am seeking, and bare with me because I'm not sure how to describe it, but most Mesa amps have this...

Amplitube's Distortion is rather "Honky" sounding...

Those presets only work in AmpliTube Metal... :( I can't seem to get a good sound out of the Rectifier or any of the other high-gain models either. I've played with input/output levels, stomp boxes, and nothing is satisfying me. It either sounds like there is too much gain (squeaky noises occur...

Amplitube's Distortion is rather "Honky" sounding...

I'm not really sure how to describe it, but the distortion I'm getting out of AmpliTube's American Lead MK III does not seem very realistic to my ears, even with a tube screamer in one of the stomp box slots. It's almost like a grinding-type sound in the upper midrange, not smooth like a Mesa...

Cabinet impulses in Reaper sound REALLY, REALLY bad.

I know I had these working when I first tried them...But now when I load an impulse file in ReaVerb or KeFIR on top of AmpliTube 3, the sound is just awful. I have the Wet gain set as high as it will go, and the Dry gain cut completely, just as it was before. I get this screaming, treble-y...

    Shure 518SB?

That is some beautiful music by the way. Sounds like the 57 is a great all-around mic.

    Shure 518SB?

Thanks for some insight, guys. I have noticed that the 518SB lacks a lot of the lower-register OOMPH that the N/D 257 picks up, and it just doesn't sound as full. I may end up buying a 57 and some sort of cheap condenser for extra saturation. I've actually been experimenting with amp sims...

    Shure 518SB?

Hey fellas, I've just been getting into home recording lately and this is my first visit here. I want to mic a guitar cabinet using 2 microphones (as of now, I might try more sometime down the road) into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface, and I've read that the Shure SM57 is the go-to...
