    Trouble with Vocals

Thanks for your replies and suggestions!! I appreciate it! I worked more on the mix this evening and tried out your suggestions, and I think it helped the harmonies sit just a bit better in the mix. I recorded a double-take of the backing vocals and have one panned 75% left and the other...

    Trouble with Vocals

Hey Everyone! I'm working on mixing a Christmas song my friends and I recorded. One of my band-mates said it sounds to him like the lead vocals and backing vocals are competing with each other in the mix. (Male lead and female backing vocals). I'm not quite sure at the moment what to try...

    New Underground rap track

The backing track sounds decent, but the vocals are not sitting right. I agree they sound very muddy and are distorting as well. It sounds like you were too close to the microphone. A pop filter will be a big help to eliminate the plosives.

    'Sugar-Free' ... instrumental electronic track.

Sounds pretty decent to me. The echoing vocals around 58sec. etc. sounded maybe just a tad too loud to me, but other than that it sounds good to me. Nice job!

Distortion, Clicks, and Crackles in raw .wav when recording

I would suspect it is related to the processing power required from the computer. You could take a look at the CPU usage while you are recording and see if it jumps around or what percentage it is sitting at. If it is too high, it could cause clicks and pops in the audio.

Been awhile! Looking for standalone 8 mic pre recorder

Seafroggys, yes that's true. It does only record at 16 bit. 24 bit would be nicer to have for sure. Also, it doesn't have a lot of editing capabilities. Not sure how much editing you're planning to do on it. I just import the audio to Cubase for editing and mixing, so it wasn't an issue for me.

Been awhile! Looking for standalone 8 mic pre recorder

I use a Korg D888 and it works great for what I need (recording drums). It has 8 individual XLR inputs, all with phantom power, and you can record all 8 channels simultaneously. However, it is now obsolete. Maybe you can find it on Ebay?

will this setup work for what i want?

For recording bass guitar, I've always DI'd it with decent results. I've used amp simulation plugins to help get the bass sound I'm going for. I agree that you'll want to consider getting a decent pair of monitors at some point, although it's good to check your mix on a pair of headphones...

    Issue with Voice Recording

I would have to say if everything else is being held constant, it is just natural differences in how your voice sounds from day to day. How do you mean your voice sounds different? What sounds different about it from one day to the next? Is the microphone being moved at all from one recording to...

New song and would really appreciate some advice

Hey Darren, It sounds like a pretty cool song, and the acoustic guitar line sounds cool. However, I agree that the guitars sound boomy and muddy. There's not much brightness to them. The vocals are sitting far back in the mix and are being overpowered by the guitars. I would either pull the...

What do you think of Reaper?

Awesome! Thanks for the replies. $60 seems hard to beat for a DAW. I am pretty used to the user interface and workflow of Cubase though. Is Reaper's interface pretty intuitive and easy to use? I have downloaded a trial version of it to experiment with.

What do you think of Reaper?

I am considering trying out Reaper for a bit. I am currently using Cubase for recording, and I was curious what your opinions of Reaper are as far as features, ease of use, capabilities, quality, software bugs etc. compared to other programs such as Cubase and ProTools.

    vocal distortion, help

I agree with what mixsit said. It has to do with the signal level either coming into your preamp or into your audio interface being too hot. I would lean in the direction of the preamp boosting the signal too much since you said you get very little distortion when you are connected direct in...

Where do you start your mixes from?

I usually start with getting a rough mix of the drums for panning and levels. I try to get them to a good starting point to build on. Then I add guitars (electric or acoustic), then bass guitar. Lead vocals is next, then lastly I add backing vocals. I get a rough mix of the song going with each...

    Bad Times

Cool song and nice melody line. I agree that the drums need to be brought up a bit. Maybe the kick drum could use a bit more low end or thump, but this might be fixed once the drums are brought up.

    Please Critique this Instrument-thick mix

Overall I think it's a pretty good mix. Performance is good too. As was mentioned before, I think the vocals could be a little more prominent in the mix. Maybe the background vocals should have a bit more reverb or eq to them? I'm not quite sure, but to me it seemed like the guitar part (in the...

    Feedback on New Mix?

Overall I think they sound pretty decent with each other. It gives it a nice "stereo" effect rather than just one guitar track. You could experiment with an electric guitar part instead and see which you like better.

Anyone up for a challenge ?

Hey Wizardof7, Glad you liked it! The declipper I used was called ReLife made by Terry West Productions. It's pretty simple. I used the ReaPlugs ReaGate (noise gate), gating below -30dB. I also added a touch of EQ with the RePlugs ReaEQ, rolling off everything below 100Hz. and cutting 2dB at...

Anyone up for a challenge ?

Hey Wizardof7, I worked on your vocal track a bit just quickly. I used a declipper plugin and also put a gate on it to remove some of the background noise. I also put some compression on it. Of course it's difficult to know how much processing to do without the rest of the song. Anyways, see...
