    acoustic guitars - name brand

Ok, so I recently went to a guitar store and was playing some of the vintage (as well as newer) Martin's & Gibson's and also some Taylors and Takamine's, etc., expecting that they would sound like heaven compared to my old '70s Yamaha, but I was honestly kind of surprised that even around the...

    complete noob..looking to get started

Basically, you'll need the following: 1. a recording software on your computer (called a DAW). 2. a microphone (or microphones), along with cables. 3. a microphone preamp (probably one that plugs in to the USB port on your computer). The microphone plugs into the preamp, which plugs into the...

Recording vocals to Garageband on iPad

the Tascam iXZ is only $50 and it has an XLR input as well as guitar input. Obviously it isn't the best thing in the world, but for that price you can't go wrong. It plugs right into the headphone jack of the iPad.

REM-type song - need arrangement advice

I feel like the vocals are a bit too loud compared to some of the other instruments and the drums lack a little bit of power; but then again maybe that's just me. I think the song sounds great. Good job overall on the song itself and the mix!

    Opinion on this mix

Thanks again everyone for the suggestions. I'll keep this all in mind when recording the real thing soon.

which microphone is better for recording at home , unidirectional or omni directional

Get a unidirectional (cardioid) condenser mic. That's gonna be much more versatile and useful in general.

    Opinion on this mix

I turned down the cymbals a bit and adjusted the overall volume of the drums since I posted this; as for the electric guitar, I'll probably re-record that. I'm gonna post a revised version of the song later with the cymbals and guitar fixed, as well as another rhythm guitar added in.

    guitar pedals

Help with recording levels--Duet 2 GarageBand

I use GarageBand too.. click on the volume slider on the track you are recording. As you move it, you should see a number either increasing or decreasing depending on where you are moving it. Move it far enough left so that it gets to -18, and start recording. Like it says above, keep the meter...

    Opinion on this mix

Thanks. Pretty much everything that you said is what i was thinking too, I wanted to see if other people agreed. I've been forced to use headphones lately to mix (monitor speakers are not an option right now) so it's been tough to get things perfect but I appreciate your insight. I'll try out...

    Opinion on this mix

This is just a quick sample of a new song I'm working on . . . it's just a demo so it's not perfect but I'm looking for feedback on the mix itself. Any tips/advice/opinions are appreciated. Thanks! Here's the link: https://soundcloud.com/xaaron1377/letting-go-inst-demo

    So I've recorded a lo-fi album

I liked the album. It was relaxing and creative. I agree with you about song patterns- there's no need to use them all of the time. The backwards parts could use a little reverb, I agree with the above. But overall this was a great album. It really stretches the barriers of what is considered...
