Old gear - tenuous link to the forum, but maybe interesting? This is Betty.

This amazing thing is NOT an organ - it is a lighting controller! I'll explain. In 1956, in England, Strand Electric, produced this control. It does look like a theatre or church organ. That is because Compton - the British firm who were sort of the fathers of 'modern' organs had a system the...

Unusual wireless mic for a low singer?

Doing a Drifters show and the baritone has a different radio mic. I’ve never seen this mic before does anyone know what it is?

    Weighted vs non-weighted

I had somebody in the studio who queried why there were two keyboards set up? In the studio I tend to do this quite often - one weighted and the other as plastic as possible. I made a video to try to demonstrate why two keyboards and just one set of sounds is my way of doing things. I figured...

    Chinese now doing Telefunken copies

I thought of getting one to see, but it's too much money. Interesting though. aliexpress mic

Cheat or not cheat? That might be the question

As we've been talking about it in another topic, I found this youtube video talking about recording in garages. I note their aunt has been in touch. I think the evidence suggests very strongly this is NOT the acoustics of that garage space. Pretty objective, I think.

Cured - strange clicking when recording

Seeing the other recent post on interference, I thought I'd share this one. In my video studio there's an old mac with a firewire Presonus Firepod - I quite like this, and being rack mountable - it's useful. The PC runs Cubase, through a red 2 channel simple interface, you know the type, and two...

    Radio Mics and cables.

When I first started working for myself, the name I chose East Anglian Radio Services was because back in the 90's - I was hiring radio microphones. I had a 'real' job' for a while but kept on the hire services, then went back full time. A phrase I constantly used when people asked about radio...

UK Summer Theatre Entertainment - an insider's view

Here is a radio interview No idea why they wanted to interview me, but it's a bit of British chat and some music - just me rambling for most of it, but I thought I'd share it.

PMT Chain in UK closes with immediate effect.

We lost GAK a while back and now another UK big chain of music shops had closed their doors - selling the stock to Gear4Music, but making all staff redundant. Not good to be a music retailer in the UK it seems. Our big suppliers are now all European. story here.

AI Vocals - I have to say I'm really impressed.

I downloaded a demo of synthesizer V studio 2 Pro and thought I'd see how simple it really was, rather than take the word of the youtubers and the manufacturer. It's really intuitive. I found a box marked tempo, another gave me a click. Without even setting anything, it picked up my MIDI...

Another breakdown of a carpenters show track.

This one explains how I created another of the songs - obviously the actual vocal is just a guide and was not used in the actual shows.

Carpenters tracks for using on stage.

I think I might have posted this a couple of years ago, but it surfaced again today - a video showing how we produced the click track for a carpenters tribute show - you can hear how the individial tracks build up.

    Vangelis on software synths

After some of the chats we've had about software synths and in another, Vangelis - I figured for a bit of fun I'd do Blade Runner. It's rough round the edges, but it was just a bit a of fun - and the synths do sounds quite ok, I think.

    Getting royalties for a cover.

I've just had a royalties payment and was going through the spreadsheet. It reveals all sorts if you dig in deep. In the UK there is a big department store chain called John Lewis, and they used one of our band tracks on a radio advert campaign last year and it generated a fair bit. I also...

Three mics on saxophone and one is a Tube mic

Following from the sax video the other day, somebody said the 4033 audio tecnica mic was thin - so I tested it along side an AKG 414 and an MXL 76 tube mic. The 4033 was by comparison far too thing and bright. Something for me to remember.

The German Martin Miller Band Videos

Not sure if you US folk have come across this group of people - some of the stuff is amazing (especially the Police Medley) but this one - because I liked Gary Moore, is pretty good.

Anybody else bought a guitar for what it looks like?

In another topic we were looking at Chibsons so I dug this one out as I really like what it looks like? Plays OK too!

An example of ears going 'blind'

In the topic about your ears getting tired - yesterday I was going to say it never happens to me, but I have been working on a track today and I've gone mix-blind. It's a show track - so think female singer. I've been struggling a bit because the original is quite a powerful ballad, with quite...

Trainwreck of a music video on youtube

I'm not posting this to take the mick out of the players, but because the two players did not know what to do. Clearly, either the sax player or the guy on keys got it wrong. I suppose the sax player could have had the music he was playing in the wrong key - but it strikes me that he was...

What did you produce in the Lockdown years?

I found this old video lurking - in the Covid days, nothing much to do so I recorded this old George Michael track - if you listen to it, at the end I found the George Michael isolated vocal and slapped it over the top. There are a few sync issues, but it's not too bad I think.
