I would not use the 991, pretty harsh. I've got an Avantone C7 LDC that I hit the pad on it and it sounds good on my acoustic.

Frankly, I try to get the sound I need by asking the drummer to fix it. But it depends on the song, what kit, the player, so I don't see how you can have a favorite technique. I'm not sure I've ever had to fix anything the same way twice lol.

Best way to know is to wipe a bit on and see how fast it soaks in, if at all. Just use a thin wipe. If it soaks in in less than a minute then I will do the whole board that way. If its really dry you can watch it disappear.
