Problems getting any results out of a fostex R8

I had the same shedding issue when I ran an R8. I suspected the cheap plastic guides being the cause of my problem back then. Is it worse around that area? In that case see if you can find some on Ebay or it might be possible to make some with a 3D printer?

    Unbalanced to Balanced Question

Actually any regular external phantom power will do the job for this, I've done this a lot cause I got an old Yamaha PA desk on which I really like its pre's. Glad you made it work :) I run unbalanced to balanced and the other way around between a Fostex G16 and a DDA Q desk, no prob. If you...

    HD Vinyl

Seems like good news. Although a bummer with digital being a nessecary part of the cutting process though. The Czech pressing plant that everyone in the "underground" (good lord I hate that word) music enviroment are using here in Denmark can cut from 1/4" 15 IPS with no AD/DA steps at all and...

Recording choir and a small ensemble with my 388 - bad idea?

Aww, feel the dilemma here. First of all; is this an actually concert? If it ain't why not bring the 388? I've tried recording really dynamic acoustic on my Fostex G16 and just like you I don't like the sound of noise reduction. Can be done but will be hissy at times so make sure your client...

    Drum Recording

OP, what kind of sound are you trying to archieve? The whole "use more OH and the close mics as a supplement" vs. "use more close mics" is truly a matter of taste, the song in question and how to get the best out of your kit, your room, the mics and the specific drummer. For my part I'm a...

Sennheiser MD 421-II or Someting Else?

And oh yeah, definitely get a M201 TG for the snare. It's great, especially combined with a mic below the snare too. Started experimenting with SDC and fuckpiles of gating (to kill the rattling quickly) late and dig it. Any half decent dynamic can be very usefull too though.

Sennheiser MD 421-II or Someting Else?

Well, I love the old MD-421's on floor tom - never tried the II's though but rarely seen any complains from anyone but snubs who likes to critisize most things out of pure habit :D MD-421's on toms is a truly classic sound - but you won't many mic clips to hold them successfully. I like the...

    "Promise You I'm Gone"

Nice tune and IMO the voice sits nicely in the mix and seems well recorded. The backing vox sounds nice too but could use even more layering to give a full choir feel. But maybe thats just the gospel and The Cars fan in me speaking :D I do find that the guitar licks early in the song is a bit...

Tots - catchy new wave like stuff

Thanks for the usefull feedback dear people. Can't remember how I EQ'ed the vocals, lots of water under the bridge since I mixed this one. The mid-rangy ness is due to make the lyrics intelligable without an extremely loud vocal. The mid range are quite busy. But if I remix it for their EP I'll...

    Compression on the way in?

If it's more important when going to tape? In a sense yes, as compressing before tape doesn't boost the tape hiss and then during mixing parallel comp with some gating going on usually does the trick and still keeping some dynamics. However if I had to use a DAW I'd probably do the same...

    Layered psychedelic madness

Thanks so much mate. In this case I actually like the loud hihat although I often had this problem too, listening to a lot of old disco and digging the loud hats in the right context. Lately I found out that the work around is placing a small diagram condenser under the snare, reversing phase...

Tots - catchy new wave like stuff

Had the immense pleasure of recorded an EP with my mates. In my ears they are a bit similar to Television, The Cars, Blondie and maybe Tom Petty on his first album. I nicked a tecnique from Roy Thomas Baker of stacking up the background vocals in the outro. There's 20 or more voices there...

    How to EQ Vocal

Without knowing your voice, the song or the mic in question this is a tricky one to answer. Samples? If you boost certain frequencies, typically in the mid range, it's usually a good idea to don't boost the same frequencies for other instruments unless they don't happen at the same time. Often...
