I very rarely get calls about the 266xl clicking. I've read a couple posts referencing "clicking" on the net, but the actual returns do not reflect a problem. I've personally only seen two units come back with this problem in five years. Both were faulty VCA's.
If you just bought the unit...
Uh no.
The 266xl was designed for guitar/bass rigs and small installs. Because of its price people started looking at it for home studio apps. Now back to your regularly scheduled dbx boycott, enjoy!
The MIDI in this unit is totally bare bones. Set the ProVocal to recieve the same channel that your foot controller is sending. Then it will respond to program changes sent from the foot controller. CC's are fixed, so on programs that have modulation fx your CC will change those fx...
There is much value. If you have a studio setup with multiple monitor pairs (as I do) it is invaluable. I have three different programs set up.
1. Event 20/20 BAS'
2. JBL LSR28p
3. JBL Consumer
Each program is pinked, speaker corrected and adjusted for my room. To select a different...
They share the same VCA, but the input/output circuitry is not the same. Similar, but not the same. Remember the 160 VU is balanced in/out, and the 117/118/119 are unbalanced, theres a big difference right there. They are still dead ringers for 160VU sonically, I'm just being nitpicky.;)
Some folks don't like fiddling with attack and release controls all day long. They want "ON" and "MORE" controls and thats it.:) Also since the 160VU one of the first VCA based comps I don't think anyone knew what people would need. As time passed people wanted more control over the functions...
IMO the sound of a compresor is in the envelope of its attack. The inherent sound of a VCA also has a bit to do with it.
I know a lot of people who swear by the 163x. If it sounds good, it is good. Anything else can go hang.
Same same. The 161, 160 share the same VCA. so they are going...
One of the other problems I've seen with this unit is that the manual is terrible, worse than terrible. In the section where it "explains" how to set up the PRE and POST gains it is totally backwards. If you set it up according to the manual, you will clip on every transient.
I have five of...
I have 5 of them and I disagree with Henri I have never had a headroom issue with mine. I wonder if he's got a bad one.
If you go to:

You can hear what a VTP-1 sounds like. All the drums, guitars, and bass were recorded through a VTP-1.
Nah, they just don't have the cache' that the 160VU has. And since they are 1/4 size, wood sided, and unbalanced, they are non-standard and awkward enough to be overlooked.
