The 48V phantom power isn't actually boosting the signal going through the mic. All it's doing is polarising the two plates of the capacitor (AKA the condenser) in the mic. Off the top of my head, a basic explanation of the way the mic works is when sound is allowed to strike one of the plates...

Not trying to hijack this thread but you've got me intrigued. Why don't you like their audio cards?

Normally you'd EQ after you compress - one reason being you affect the compression everytime you change the eq if you do it the other way around. Why don't you record it clean and play around with it after though?

If your voice sticks out like a sore thumb, just putting a little reverb on it will immediately move it further back in the mix. If it still sticks out, maybe drop the level a little. If you now can't hear the words, you could play around with the pre delay on the reverb and try boosting...

In the studio you'd be tracking with compression if you set it up this way. It'd give you more flexibility if you could get your signal in without compressing it and then route back it out to the RNC when you've decided on how much compression you need. If your soundcards got lots of in's and...

The range of SE Electronics SDC's are well within your budget (SE1 is about 65 quid here in the UK). Then again I've only seen reviews so have absolutely no idea what they sound like (not very helpful I know!). I suppose it give's you another possible option to consider though.

I've just bought a B1 and VTB1 pre for home use (call me extravagant ;) ) and so far I've been really impressed at the results I'm getting for the money I spent. True, it doesn't sound anywhere near as nice as a U87 through an Avalon but it cost me a 160 quid and gets perfectly useable results...

We use 4040's here for recording commercials. They're neutral sounding and seem to work well with most voices.....not as well as a U87 mind, but a lot cheaper.
