I replaced the capstan belt a while ago. so I do not think it's that - I do have a spare so maybe I can look at it again (it wasn't fun).
also - the fellow that worked on it has worked on it before and he seemed pretty familiar with the operation. thanks for clearing up which motor runs which...
I have an analague Tascam 488 - the older model not the MKll. It will not record or play. It will fast forward & rewind. However when I push play/record or play it starts for a second or two then stops - holding the buttons down gives me the same results. I took it to a service that...
I actually own one of those Tascam 106 ( a photo you posted a while ago). I think I paid $75.00 for back in 1998/2000 - It still works and I do use it occasionally - but I'm more of a 488 guy. anyway great photo.

I have a 488 - the original not the mkll -I don't think it's the belt. usually when they go the tape slows up & down because it's slipping. the whirring noise most probably is the captain motor - . - the idea of teeth missing that sweet beets referred to sounds very logical and might account...
I also have a Tascam 488 - and what happened to you also happened to me. It turned out to be a capstan motor - luckily for me, my town has a guy that fixes stereo equipment.
the repairs cost me about $100.00 - I also changed the belt (not for the faint hearted) because changing the belt was...
I have been using it for a couple years - It vastly improved my recordings and understanding- I recommend it for any newbie.
I always find myself gong back to it and it almost always answers my questions. - McIan sure did home studio-phials a service on this one
Another issue is a constant whirling humming sound coming from the machine. Could this be fixed with new belts?? The heads have been cleaned with the recommended alcohol and cotton swabs and demagnetized.
The whirring/humming noise could be a belt.. tricky, but fairly easy to replace- it...
