    Franz Ferdinand Vocal Sound

    1. Mix equal parts Joy Division, Talking Heads and Wire. 2. Learn each respective band's catalog. 3. Re-arrange the parts, buy vintage gear, hire stylist. 4. Continuously lie to yourself and the public that you are coming up with a style "all your own". 5. Repeat ad nauseum. See also...

Samples of drums recorded with budget overheads?

Shit, sounds good to me. What kind of preamp are you using??

    What's limiting YOUR recordings??

I'm gonna have to say my room. Small, boxy, full of equipment. I'm going to begin construction on a studio in my backyard in the next few weeks so I see no point in treating it. But I'm sure some people could make much better recordings than I can with the same equipment. Also, I have no...

    Best Audio Interface?

I was at a trade show last weekend and the Presonus Fireport is AWESOME. I have a Delta 1010 and am seriously contemplating making the switch to Presonus gear. Check out Sweetwater. They've got some samples.

    Seperate Tracks

I'd suggest M Audio's Delta 66. IMO, a damn fine soundcard for just under $200.

    SM57 Alternatives

Although the Shure SM57 is considered the 'standard' for mic'ing and recording guitar amps, I'm just not happy with its performance. So I'm wondering, what are your guys' opinions on alternatives to the old faithful SM57...??

    Your Best Little Trick...

'My' 'Tricks' Awesome thread! Let's see... Newest trick concerns recording bass guitar. Along with the DI, take a small bass combo amp and face it towards a corner with both sides touching the opposing walls. Place a mic about 6" above the back of the amp, pointing downwards at about a 45...

    Drums sound HORRIBLE

2 AKG C460s for OHs, SM57 on snare and...uh...a Shure PG57 in the kick. I know, it sounds odd, but I'm getting a good sound with it, so why rock the boat?

    Drums sound HORRIBLE

Thank you, sir. Agreed, the snare is hot, and not in a good way. Heads need changing BADLY. Small-room reflectivity? You win a prize. My project when I get back from New Orleans this weekend (Shellac!!!) is to work on treating my box I call a studio. Maybe I'll post another mix later...

    Drums sound HORRIBLE

Updated Mix Thanks to everyone for your input. BTW, yeah, I'm well aware that the guitar sounds like ASS. But that's another post all together. The bass part will be redone as well. Give it a gander. Nice drums! Shitty guitar!

Overheads: AKG C460s Kick: Shure PG 57 (don't laugh, it sound pretty nice compressed and eq'd...I'll eventually break down and get a D112) Snare: Shure SM57 (need an alternative...suggestions??) Room: Rode NT1 (rarely used because my wife's always in the living room) Symetrix 425...

Noisy Video Hum from Monitors? HELP!!!

I'm having a simliar problem... My desk is set up like so: mixing board to the far left, flat pannel LCD monitor in the center, CPU to the far right. I just noticed the buzz this morning. I had headphones on and was about to record a bass riff, plugged directly into the board. I heard a...

    Drums sound HORRIBLE

Any ideas on how to fix this? The link will lead you to mixes of a song I recorded recently and the drums sound weak, thin, dead... Mix #1 seemed to have too much kick, not enough snare and overheads too low in the mix. Mix #2 lowers the kick & guitar slightly, raises the snare (perhaps too...
