    recomendations for 2nd Mic Preamp

CoolCat, you'll have to clue me in on what "clean machines pres'" are. In any case, I've got a Sound Skulpture MP566 on the way. Just felt I had to have one tube pre. Might be good for bass tracking eh?

    VST plugins vs outboard gear

The advantage of the option of running plugs realtime would be cool, and I considered swapping my Fireface 800 for an Apollo, but after doing some research I think I'll hang on to the FF and go with a AUD DSP card. It's a trade off.

    VST plugins vs outboard gear

Thanks for the replies. It's as I thought. It seems it would be simpler/practical and more bang for the buck now to invest in UAD plugin bundle and the required accelerator card. I don't know if I'd need any more hardware devices than that to get set up with UA plugins. I see they have...

How to place outboard gear in path

I'm considering these Sound Skulptor DIY 500 series. They get good reviews. For the same price as one pre-built, you could acquire several and assemble you own. After the MP566 pre, the Tape simulator looks cool, or comp, etc. whatever. If tracking with several units, you would connect mic...

    VST plugins vs outboard gear

I get the impression from these responses that VST processing is pretty much equal to outboard gear in terms of sound quality. Tracking with outboard gear though (ahead of DAW in the chain) can't be altered of course. Running signal from DAW to outboard gear post tracking can be altered as...

    VST plugins vs outboard gear

Does outboard gear have an edge over vst plugins? I have Waves vst plugins loaded but haven't reached the stage of using them yet. I also have a lunch box with two preamps (all that I need for tracking) leaving four empty slots. It's tantalizing to want to put some more toys in there.:p...

    recomendations for 2nd Mic Preamp

further research ... now leaning towards the MP566 for a tube pre. Some reviews claim they're smoother, less muddy than 610s'. Wish I had time to build the kit but I'm anxious to get recording. Haven't seen any comparisons with that and the La Chappell 583 either. So MP566 it is most likely.

    UA M610 vs solo610

I'm liking the idea of a tube pre. I see there's a lot of love or hate with the 610s', so I think I'll save and spring on a higher end unit like the La Chappell 583e, the two slot model with eq. More likely I'll love it. Between that and the GR, I should have all the versatility I'd ever need.

    UA M610 vs solo610

S610 looks like a stand alone unit, not lunchbox. I like the variable setting between the input and output gain control with the 610's to bring in more or less tube coloring.

    UA M610 vs solo610

I'm leaning towards a s610 for my 2nd mic pre and found a M610 local for sale for $500. How do they compare? Thanks

    recomendations for 2nd Mic Preamp

"GRs are great. You shouldn't need any other pre" Mid/side mic technique requires two mics so I need two pres'. Since I have a GR thought I'd get something else for variety. One mic is a ribbon figure 8 for room ambience. Part of the question... is it that important for the preamp for the...

    recomendations for 2nd Mic Preamp

Or do I need one? I"m just starting to experiment with mid/side recording for acoustical guitar. I have the appropriate mics but only one mic pre which is Great River in a lunch box. There are the stock pre amps in my Fireface 800 interface which I'm sure does not match the quality of the GR...

    midi keyboard/ virtual instruments recomendation

"As a guitarist you could do what I did- forget about using a MIDI keyboard and play MIDI guitar with a Fishman Tripleplay guitar pickup. " This looks like a good option for me too as a guitarist. I've heard great piano sounds on midi-guitar, but NOT the other way around. Although it's not...

    midi keyboard/ virtual instruments recomendation

"Did you really just say that you want to play instruments that you don't play on an instrument that you don't play?" Ha! I certainly did. That's funny. You might have a point here. I play guitar, electric bass and pedal steel. I'll check out the guitar-to-midi option and see what kind of...
