I agree with Lt. Bob. It could work on certain things...not everything and especially not bass. This is a really touchy machine...not very forgiving at all.
The 80-8 sounds 1975 to my ears - after all that's when it was designed. Much later than the 60s gear that spoiled eveybody (ie that's why...
Your right it's a Teac 15!! Thanks for the kind words.
I have yet another recording I made on the 80-8 - perheps the best one I've made yet. I seem to be on an upward trend in terms of getting a good sound out of the 80-8. I'm not posting this recordings because the song idea I had was good...
Those are pearl drums the red ones, and probably Star drums the blues.....the blues are WAY more high pitched sounding and the reds fatter. I believe the blues are older.....more keith moon sounding. The snare and bass drum have re-rings, but the toms do not, which is why they sounds so high...
Here is a new song I recorded with the machine fresh off the tape from this morning!!!!!:

It's a tribute to seals and crofts but you get the picture....
Here's all the other recordings in order of completion...
Thanks a lot for all of the nice compliments. ChrisGhost - you're probably going to appreciate this: I made a new recording this morning with the gear and found myself with loads more definition:

Quite incredible really if you compare...
Here's a new recording I slapped together today , me on all instruments ...sounds much better than the first one I posted here....a little homage to seals and crofts:

1 bass drum
2 snare
3 two mounted toms
4 bass guitar (mic)
5 bass guitar...
I already have a two-track mixdown deck, I'm just still in the process of unpacking: (the serial number on this machine dates it to 1974!!!)
As for the dust, It's true....but since I havent bought this home, I'm simply throwing tapestries over all of the stone walls (as you can see I've...

Hey there everybody couldn't contain myself, had to share. Finally moved into a house that has a basement so my gear finally has a home and I can finally start building a studio.
The tape machine is Teac 80-8, the mixer is a Teac M15, and the tape is Scotch 203, all three items from the...
I think it sounds incredible. However, can you share with me your STUDIO recordings made on the 80-8 in the '70s? Live recordings always have a different sound from studio recordings, and 1970s studio recordings made on the 80-8 is more what I'm after. Something more like Zokalo. Thanks a lot.
Another 25er here. I noticed that I disliked digital in 2000 because I was listening to Dark side of the moon (floyd, '72) and Relayer (Yes, '74) and I thought digital couldn't sound that way. I went into a nice digital recording studio running Paris in 2000 to make a demo with a friend and upon...
It makes me quite sad that the Jan. 1978 recording of your Zokalo album have been taken down. I wanted to see how a pro could make an 80-8 sound. From one 80-8 owner to another, I'd love to hear that a track from the album!!
