Hello,
I'm wondering if there's any potential problems in recording a guitar amp using the mid/side technique, but having the side mic on-axis to the amp rather than the mid mic. My thinking is this:
If I want to have two guitars in my song, to achieve some separation between them I might pan...
I think I'll go for it. At the price its a steal for what its worth. If I need to get another preamp later down the line then so be it. Thanks for the input.
The SE Electronics R1 ribbon mic has been discontinued for some time now and the prices (at least here in the UK) are a fraction of what they were when the mic was still being manufactured.
I'm tempted to buy one but my concern is this; according to the spec sheet on the Focusrite website, my...
Hey guys,
If anyone is interested, here are some audio files so you can play around with them and see what you get. Remember its three cardioid mics, one facing left, one right and one facing the middle.
This is what I did to get my m/s. Flipped the polarity of the right mic, then summed it...
Thanks for the recommendation, I've looked at the mic online and it seems to be a good mic. The versatility of having a mic that can operate with multiple polar patterns is obviously a huge plus, and at the relatively low cost it's definitely worth considering.
I will try and post some clips of...
Yeah, people go to Albini because of his reputation, he doesnt need to seek clients out, they come to him. I think its because they like his attitude towards recording and the music industry in general. I do too, I have to say. For one thing, placing the responsibility of decision-making...
I think I've got it more or less sorted in my mind, I'm placing two cardioid microphones on top of each other, facing opposite directions, I should be able to (more or less) simulate a figure of eight mic, IF I reverse the polarity of one of the mics.
The null point of a cardioid mic is at 180°...
Cool, was it recorded by an engineer at Electrical? Just listening to "Rid of Me" and I can see what you mean about the dynamic changes, they are quite extreme. But then, maybe PJ Harvey wanted it that way. As far as I'm aware Albini doesn't like to change the sound to suit his own tastes, he...
I've never worked with his drum sounds, I'm a complete amateur I only work with my own stuff. I've heard surfer rosa by the pixies and the Albini mix of in utero, I've also heard some shellac stuff. I dunno to me they sound great, but Albini has quite a different attitude to recording than a lot...
Thanks for the input guys
I know what im trying to do is not ideal and for a true m/s array I would use a figure of 8 mic, and yes I know I can use X/Y instead, I just wanted to experiment. I got the idea from a talk I found on youtube by Steve Albini on recording drums where he said you could...
Hi there,
Apologies if this question has been answered elsewhere. I want to be able to track using the Mid/Side technique, but I can't afford to buy a new (bidirectional) microphone. I want to try and simulate the "side" microphone (which I understand should be bidirectional) by placing the...
