How to test studio monitors in the store

What Massive said. Then buy your top two contenders (two different models) and bring them home for a final shoot-out. A good store should allow this approach if you explain that you'll be buying one or the other. A sale's a sale. If not, use the same approach online. I've done both and would...

    Johnson J-Station power supply polarity?

Love the J-Station. Have had one for 10 years and still use it all the time, especially for its great clean tones. Like that it's easy to tweak, too.

Check out the new Tape Op mag, arrived yesterday, for an interesting article about the future of iPad recording.

Mackie, JBL, KRK.. which monitors should i get?

Easy solution. Find a store, brick or online, that allows you to return without penalty, and order your top 2-3 choices. Put them through the paces in your own space. I predict that one of them will speak to you clearly and that it's hard to say which one that will be. I did the same with 3...

KRK Rokit RP6 vs. KRK Rokit RP8?

Nothing beats buying/ordering both and comparing them in your own place. Make sure the losers' return won't be a prob, of course.

Which of these headphones are the best?

I've owned or used quite a few closed cans for tracking and editing, and these are my favorites: http://www.headphone.com/headphones/audio-technica-ath-m50s-straight-cable.php You can find them cheaper if you search a bit. Stellar value, IMO.

    M-Audio AV30 Monitors?

Don't know about that model, but here's a little competitor that got a great mention in the current Tape Op mag: http://www.jr.com/tascam/pe/TAS_VLM3/

    The truest Headphones

If closed back, then Audio Technica ATH-M50. My favorite of the many I've used, and the price is right.

Mics for under $100 - that just may work for you.

Thanks, man. I'm still using a couple of original SP B1s for my acoustic guits and really like the results, but I have no idea how they compare to the MXL LDCs. No biggie, but thanks for the feedback.

Mics for under $100 - that just may work for you.

Good stuff, Harvey. I always learn from you. I notice the lack of many other popular $100 LDCs (e.g., AT, AKG, Studio Projects models) and am wondering if that's by your preference or simply not having them around.

    Micro-monitors

Haven't used any of them, Richie, but the Yamaha MSP-3 (4" cone) has received great reviews. Even won Future Music's blind shoot-out for small monitors (5" and under) a couple of years back. I see an even smaller micro version--MS 101III--on Yamaha's site. Might be worth a try.

Heaphone gadget for playing on top of recorded track?

I use this: Alesis PMG Playmate Guitarist CD Player Picked mine up for $100 retail a year back although it was discontinued, I believe. You can probably still find one with a search. Great little unit for what it is--I use mine for songwriting and practicing parts.

Solved If for some reason you could only play one type of music what would it be?

Anything with the words progressive or fusion... which means that I can play a bit of everything. Now that's my fav kind of music!
