I'm looking for a good starter vocal mic for under $300 USD - is it possible?

Inasmuch as it will be exposed to somewhat loud noises, I'd shoot for a Heil PR40. These come in around $300 but you can find kits for this that include other accessories. I got mine with a mic stand and shock mount.

Rode NT1 or Sennheiser MK4 for Voice Over?

I moved from New Orleans to San Diego (taking care of mom), and started using the Rode NT1A for Zoom meetings. I got several comments that my mic sounds much better compared to a Blue Mouse and several small diaphragm condenser mics. That's good news as the NT1A is reasonably priced and very...

Would you consider buying a used microphone post COVID?

Fortunately for me, I would never consider buying a used mic under any circumstances. I bought a new, pricey condenser mic online. It was a dud. With an Apollo running at maximum gain, it barely produced more than a whisper. They took it back, erased my "1" rating for it. And Voila, there was a...

How to take care of my mic?

I leave them on the boom, but move the mic where it won't get bumped or have something like a fan or sunlight hitting it. My house is pretty dry because of AC being on all the time, so I protect the capsule area of the mic with an elastic wrist band (like people use to wipe sweat off their...

Need a first LDC for home studio

If they are still available, my best sounding microphone for the price is the Neat King Bee, if it is still around. It started off as a $300+ microphone, but the price dropped because its insane appearance turned off too many people. If the King Bee isn't available, the Worker Bee is a good...

    Shure SMb7

I have one that I bought for voiceover, but it doesn't flatter my voice. I have heard other VOs use it to great effect. I use the 414 for broadcast (with the foam on it), but I should have gone with the cardioid version instead. You might like the EV RE20 better than the Shure.

    About the pop screen

I'm always leery of pop filters that are right next to the front. Lewitt's is directly in front of the microphone (like maybe 3/8"). I don't talk directly into it, so it hasn't been an issue for me.

    About the pop screen

It is a very precise fit with the Lewitt. I have to jiggle it a bit before the magnets click into place. I would call it the least universal pop filter.

    Tube Mic with Phantom Power?

A bit off-topic, but how do you like the Avantone? I've never known anyone who owned one.

    whats the deal on mics?

They all sound the same. There is a point of diminishing returns at about $1000.

    Townsend L22 Sphere Vs U87Ai?

It sounds good enough to me to not even think about purchasing a $4K microphone. And I generally don't use the U47 or U87 setting. Most of the time, I use one of the Telefunken settings.

    Rode NT1 + scarlett 2i2 + 48V - is this right?

For my UAD interfaces, most condenser mics are good at about 1:00 on the scale.

    Neumann TLM 102

When I bought mine from B&H, it said that it came with a shock mount, but it didn't. I noticed that there was a higher priced set with a shock mount, about $100 more.

    Neumann TLM 102

As was suggested above, a few Rycotes in different sizes will accommodate everything except square microphones. But avoid the Rycotes that have the handy spring-loaded parts on it. Many mics will slip right out.

    Neumann TLM 102

I think it is compatible with the Sennheiser shock mount, but both of them are pricey for what you get. The one I bought looks like most shock mounts, but has a lower rail on one side, as the capsules of these mics are often quite low.
