I'm thinking of ordering an API 512c preamp and can't figure out for the life of me whether I have to get one of those overly expensive rack power supplies or whether that's just icing on the cake for those who need it. Please enlighten me folks.

No. They use way more CPU and most of the plugins aren't all that great. I use Voxformer for getting a half-decent vocal sound for a rough mix, but that's about it.

I've never used one myself, but Neumann came out with a handheld condensor that I've heard on a couple live DVDs and it sounds really, really good. I'm pretty sure it was the KMS 105.

You sound confused about why people like to use tape. Normally its used for tracking to get that tape compression analog sound, which is either then run into Pro Tools, or the mix is done on tape. Obviously you don't go to the store and buy albums on ADATs or 2-inch, so just burn it to CD like...
