    Make my own monitors

Sorry to confuse! I was just saying thay the advantages of a bought active (I'd never be able to make an active monitor) to a built passive is the cost. I like the idea of an active system as you can have as many monitors as you like without taking up piles of rack space, having an amp for...

    Make my own monitors

Ok, well this isn't strictly a "Recording" question, per se, but I figgered you lot would be fairly knowlegable in this area anyway... I've thought that it might be cheaper to make my own monitors for on-stage use.. than shell out for powered monitors which seem to cost a fortune. I found a...

    Bass Micing

Myself I generally use just DI. But then usually we are recording bass and drums at the same time, so you get some spill onto the kick and drum overheads. I'll definatley try micing it next time around. MD421's I can get. Hmm

    Good floor tom mic?

Where do you put the darn things? I tried putting one underneath, but that was a nightmare because the skin just resonated when you hit anything, so there was this awful *nyoing* noise through a whole test track. Tried re-tuning the bottom skin but it just made a different kind of nyoing...

    A good mic for begginers?

Reading the title of this thread I *immediatley* thought SM-58. Hard as nails, and sounds fairly decent while doing it. You can use it for anything! SM-87 is a good "step up" for a vocal mic. They sound beautiful live :D I'd save yourself some trouble and get a cheap notebook type mixer...

Why are Rap Vocals so Clear?

Yeah i think its probably got a lot to do with the vocals being recorded VERY well, and also that the whole rest of the mix has no vocal freqs in it at all. I've never heard of this Aural Exciter thing, but it sounds like it might have somthing to do with it. (It looks like a magic "hey...

I need help getting a "wider" mix!

Well, in CEP there is a thing in Pan/Expand in Amplification which "increaces the width", and there is a preset called "Mastering Width" which makes it about 45% wider. Not sure about such a thing in pro-tools However, I have absolutley no idea what it actually does, but it sounds fairly good...

making 'space' for instruments in the mix

What kind of drum beats are we talking about here? if its quite simple you could try EQing the piano gently to make room for the drums.

    Anti-reverb? voice that sounds distant

I would say EQ as much of it out as you can, and compress it. Not really much you can do about that really. I for one HATE Noise Reduction, you can get just as good results if you compress/gate it and use a FFT filter on it

OK...it's my turn to put it out there.....

Excelent, I'm glad that it will have vocals. Cymbal hits sound a bit cheesy, but hey, thats unavoidable when programming drums for the most part. It's a bit blurry down the low end, perhaps make the bass part a bit more trebly? I'm not sure. I listened with open air speakers and closed...

16 year old progressive/hard rock band

Just listening to it, would be good to normalise this as its just a rough track, just so you can listen to it without cranking the volume. I wouldn't suggest that for a final mix though ;) The Rivera Definatley improve your playing together skills. To me it just sounds like a really long...

    Post your favorite production tricks!

Nice easy one for me. Basically just stereo delay, but you do it manually. You get the guitar track, split it into two (copy mono wave, pan one left one right, whatever) and shift one of them a few miliseconds to the right or left. Then you have the reverb use a mix of the both as the source...

    Room Ambience

Argh, bathroom?! Surley thats got lots of flat surfaces (like a bath..? unless youre talking about a toilet.. darn yankees ;) ) and it would echo like hell! Well, as long as you're happy with it, thats the main thing :)

    Hypostasis - Yet more

Speed metal eh? :D Thin is a recurring theme with these recordings, and I'm really not sure why. Guitars... well, the guy who plays it has the following settings on his amp : Bass -10 , Mid +10, Treb -10. And he refuses to change it. And there aint much i can do about that after that...

    Room Ambience

Isolating the gear is ideal if you want complete control over the mix. If you wanted complete isolation, you would have bass amp in one room (if your micing it, not DIing it... more on that in a minute) guitar in another, with everyone sitting in one room with their instruments and headphones...
