    External HDs and Firewire

Use a 4-6 pin adapter for the interface. The other two pins are used to power the firewire device *if necessary*. The Presonus doesn't need to be powered by the firewire bus, so it'll be fine.

    Strangely Distorted Input... HELP!

I've recently built a new computer, and am using an Echo Audiofire12 as the interface, and Reaper as the software. System specs are: Core2Duo Quad 2.66 Asus P5Q Nvidia GTS 250 4gig ram Vista 64-bit The Audiofire works perfectly for output, either by Windows, or Reaper, and I can happily use...

Does this exist (DI / Headphone amp)

The SMPRO M-Patch2 might be what you're looking for. It has a pair of balanced inputs, and 3.5mm aux input that you could plug a headphone signal into. It also has two balanced outputs, and you can switch between the inputs/outputs.

Great cheap drums? "SM7 is to mics as X is to drums..."

If you're buying new, I higly recommend the Mapex Meridian or the Sonor Force drums, either maple or birch. As far as I know, the shells are made in the same factory, so the choice between the two brands is mainly aesthetic, or based on how good a deal you can get. Cymbals... Whether you're...

    Micing a Cymbal Swell

I agree with recording it mono, and maybe double tracking it a panning hard L/R. Does the cymbal sound good in the room? ;) A bad sounding cymbal is just that - bad sounding. There isn't a lot you can do about that... Also, using soft mallets, on opposite sides of the cymbal will help...

    fustrating 24" bass drum

The amount of mass needed to be moved it gives it a terrible high frequency response, which leaves you with a lot of low end...

    Netbooks as DAWs?

I'm using a Lenovo S10 netbook to record drums with. It sits nicely on my percussion table... I use Reaper, a firewire HDD and an Echo AudioFire12 + a firewire card in the PCMCIA Express slot. The only issue arises when I use reverb plugins, because of the processing power needed. Recording 12...

    What's more important...mic or preamp?

I'm just going to weigh in, and completely disregard the debate about matching a quality mic with a low quality pre and vice versa. I'll be more worried about choosing the right mic for a recording than choosing the right pre. For example, if I'm recording a kick drum, I'll be more worried...

    Outdoor Recording

Even though this is a home recording forum, my advice would be to hire a professional engineer to record you in a good drum room. It'll cost, but ultimately, I think you'd get much more satisfying results much quicker and with less hassle. I guess it all comes down to why you want to do it. Is...

On an off topic... That sounds good! Who was playing keys there?

    Who's Next...

Have you ever used a firewire device on this computer before? If not, in 'Network Connections', is there a network called '1394'?

    Snare Question??

I'm just going to repeat this... There's no way that you could tune, or dampen the ring out of a G1 on the bottom of a snare and make it sound good.

    pa system: more power?

If the vocals are as loud as possible before feeding back, getting a more powerful setup isn't going to help. The vocals will still feed back at the same point. The key to reducing feedback is speaker placement and mic technique. You may have to get used to singing a little closer to the mic...

    Snare Question??

If you are actually using a G1 on the bottom, that's the problem. You need a snare-side head, which is thin enough. A G1 is 10mil thick. I think your average snareside head is .3mil thick.
