You may want to check out talkbass.com. it is a really great forum for bass players. Lots of folks with lots of different levels of experience. Hardly any Greg-type trolling (he and his minions keep me off of this site except for checking in to see if anything has gotten better here a few times...

    SM57 sounding too harsh.

Greg - I completely agree. But, I also believe that knowledge is power. Being aware of history, understanding differences between high-end analogue studios and a modern home recording studio, and having a large set of techniques in one's toolbag, all pay dividends. IMHO, one can and should...

    SM57 sounding too harsh.

This is not personal. I think this forum has a lot to offer and wish it were more of a community and was more welcoming. Yes, I have listened to the posted work (typically SC) of many people here and have messaged them with my (positive) reaction to their work. Yes, I have appreciated the time...

    SM57 sounding too harsh.

Please ignore those on this forum who prefer trolling to sharing knowledge and working as part of a community. They have chased away many more than they have assisted. This forum certainly would be more vibrant if such folks were more generous and less narcacistic in their approach to...

    SM57 sounding too harsh.

Gly Johns has done some excellent interviews recently - book, interviews etc. He talks about this issue. If you put the mic near the amp you will not get the tone that an audience is used to hearing, period. Distance impacts tone.

    Ampeg SVX Plug In

Anyone have experience with IK Mulyimedia's Ampeg SVX Software Suite (Bass Amp Simulator)? I'm curious as to the quality of the amp and cabinet simulations, esp the 1) B-15 and 2) SVT w 8x10 cab. FWIW, I use S1 v2 Pro.

    Buying my second microphone!

I would venture to say that most engineers have a 58 and a 57 in their mic locker. That may be a good place to start and would handle the situation you describe.

Ideas on escaping a creative rut and learning something new?

Assuming you are on this forum b/c you do home recording, you might want to work on recording songs in a different style than you are used to. In fact, you may be able to get tunes from folks on this forum and play on them. Just a thought. There are people here who are willing/interested in...

Whats a great DAW software for recording?

I agree. Use the one that is most comfortable for you in terms of doing what you want/need to do. I used pro tools for a while. Then I picked up an AudioBox that came with Studio One (and melodyne and ez drummer). Fast forward, and I now use S1 Pro as well as the top versions of Melodyne and...

Happy 69th to Ritchie! A good day to play some Deep Purple and Rainbow!!

    Microphone suggestions?

Good to have both a 58 and a 57 in your arsenal. Based on needs, I would recommend getting the 58 first and then when finances allow, picking up a 57. Note that MF has deals on either and both where you can get an inexpensive stand and cable for just a few bucks extra - two of each if you pick...

Headphones for mix down and vocal recording question

You might want to check out the Sony MDR7502. For phones in that price range, I think they do a good job. They are not at the quality of the 7506s, but I like them a lot esp for the price range you are considering.

Recording Revolution is at it again

I agree that for many genres, even for a college station, you would likely need to get the kick and the snare, along with stereo overheads. So, 4 proper mics at a min. Exceptions might be music that doesn't rely on a kick/snare to be real prominent - some songs in genres like blues, jazz...

Recording Revolution is at it again

I've listened to some of your stuff previously. Very impressed. I'll bet that given a talented band with an excellent tune, if you had one 58, you could get a band recorded at a quality that it could be played successfully on college radio stations. One mic on drums. Same mic for vocals and...

Recording Revolution is at it again

I'm new to this forum and don't know the history, but given that your intent is to do a reasonable demo in a home studio to bring to your band, this might be a good way to go. Spend the time on the creative-writing process and get things on "tape" in the most representative way for the band but...
