    searching for a 238 Syncaset

I have one I'll sell. It does need some work. The motor assembly makes a thumping sound. Could be a bad belt. A guy named Fred Marrs can sell you a fresh belt for nearly any tape deck ever made. He's well regarded in the taping community, although a few people who live outside the US have...

What organ was used on Leslie Gore's recording of "Misty?"

Talking about the one on her first album. Anyone know?

    TASCAM M3500....just picked one up!

Excellent info. We don't usually consider the effects that unused jacks may have on the signal path.

How exactly does the Vinyl cutting process work?

One special signal processor for vinyl mastering that I know of is the elliptical equalizer. This concentrates the bass sounds towards the center of the soundfield to prevent the stylus from jumping out of the groove at playback.

    TASCAM M3500....just picked one up!

It's very rare for ICs to go bad. Bad electrolytic caps are much more common. In fact, that's the most common failure in old electronics. The ICs you reseated probably had dirty socket contacts that were cleaned by removing and reinserting them.

    TASCAM M3500....just picked one up!

It may not be a problem if you don't use it for tracking. When you set a mixer up for tracking, you want the test signal levels from all tracks to be the same when you play back the recorded test tone. It was a problem for me because some channels appeared to be dead or have greatly diminished...

    TASCAM M3500....just picked one up!

I think once the OP tries to calibrate the mixer against a multitrack recorder, he'll find some recapping is needed. I'd start with recapping the group bus cards, as that completely solved my calibration problem with the M-308.

Need studio monitors. can't break the bank.

The advice given above about room treatment is critical then. If you make a recording in an untreated garage, nobody will be surprised it was made in a garage. It will be apparent to all. Yes. The KEF speakers on Ebay that I linked to earlier would not only make better monitors than the...

    Tascam 238 8-track (should i go there?)

As far as I can see from a brief look at the manual, the Spirit Folio isn't well suited to multitracking, as it only has stereo tape outputs. You'll want a mixer with enough tape outputs and inputs for all 8 tracks on the 238.

Do you have a decent stereo amplifier? If so, a good pair of speakers will work. There's nothing special about "studio monitors" in that price range. Two KEF C25 Bookshelf Speakers Black | eBay

When will this Portastudio bubble burst?

If cassette tapes become scarce in the next few years, I may start selling off my large stash of sealed Type IIs. The current market prices are too high for me to want to buy more, but not high enough for me to want to sell.

Can I sing? What do you think about my voice?

I suppose I could, but it wouldn't sound right. I'll leave the Perry impersonation to Arnel, since he's better at it than I am. :D I think his brogue is interesting, but you're right, his tone on the other song is lacking in clarity. Zach, try working on your enunciation. You have a nice...

Multiband Compression Adds High Pitched Ring to Kick Drum

Any compressor can cause ringing if you overuse it. Apparently MBC offers more opportunities for things to go awry. Couldn't you accomplish about the same goal with a side chain EQ in a regular compressor?
