Preamps and Amplifiers for Vocal Recording?

Aha! So they're called preamps even though there's no amp. That explains why my monitors were powered. Good to know!

Preamps and Amplifiers for Vocal Recording?

Hi, Ryan! As far as I know, you're right. I think of a preamp as anything that boosts or shapes a signal before it gets to a power amp. In a guitar tube amp, the little tubes are for the preamp and the big tubes are for the power amp — both in one box. And any overdrive pedal (or other...

    SM57 versus SM58: What's the difference?

I know that 58s are usually used for vocals and 57s are usually used for instruments. I also know that they're similar and both can be used for both. So tell me: What's the difference? Thanks! Del ( •)—:::

Mac users: Logic Pro or Reaper?

Yeah, I've been trying their forum, but I don't get many responses. Not helpful. I'll check out Kenny and John.

Mac users: Logic Pro or Reaper?

Thanks, Lance! As for working out arrangements and tab and whatnot, I just do that with pen and paper, and if I have instructions for other players, I just tell them. I'm not a professional musician. One of my concerns about GarageBand is because of a review that I read that said it's...

Mac users: Logic Pro or Reaper?

I'm a folkie, so won't use many plug-ins or effects, and I'll never need synth or drums. So tell me more about the intuitive part. And how Logic Pro compares to GarageBand. Thanks!

Mac users: Logic Pro or Reaper?

Here's a question for Mac users: I've been test-driving Reaper and wonder whether the greater pricetag of Logic Pro is worth it. If you think it is, why? Thanks! Del

    Audacity multi-tracking question

Yup. No one's going to phone in tracks, but I get it. (It's useful. I've used it. Just not often. And a little goes a long way.)

    Audacity multi-tracking question

PS - Anyhow, books have always worked for me. Post #2 on this thread puts it well: https://homerecording.com/bbs/threads/noobs-before-posting-read-this-the-ultimate-newbie-faq-thread.282550/

Having an Objective View of Your Abilities

If I looked at my talent objectively I'd give it all up.

    Audacity multi-tracking question

Thanks! Good to know. Although I don't often use compression (I rarely want to smooth things out), it does sound like an advantage, because I do use EQ and reverb a lot and wouldn't mind having a noise gate and de-esser to clean things up.

    Thanks. That helps!

    Audacity multi-tracking question

Yup. Done. The hurdle was finding the little (on my 13" screen, everything's little!) Routing Matrix tab. One reason I'd like to use Audacity is that it's easier to see. The print is bigger and the contrast is better. But if it won't route (as suggested in posts 2 and 4), that's that. Know...

    Audacity multi-tracking question

Not helpful. Not true. Obvious. Yes. I love YouTube. Not helpful. (But - If I had a third hand I could stop coming here and tie that one behind my back, too.) I'm not an opera singer. Tapping the mic is exactly what I did. Singing an aria just sounds better. It doesn't matter whether I sang...
