best way to retain high end?

Well put. The way I look at it, if you're having trouble now, it's best to take the time and get your room in order. With basement studios and DIY treatments, it's tough to get it "perfect" (note the quotes), but it can certainly take 90% of the guesswork. It'll save you time in the long run...

I guess you have that covered.

    Turntable Needles

Styluses are just like any other audio component... they each have a different sound. Some people prefer one over another. I like a flat sound with good tracking, so I use the Shure M97xE cartridge. I was using a Goldring before that but it picked up more innergroove distortion, and was a little...

best way to retain high end?

I have this problem as well, and I'm convinced that it's the acoustics in my basement studio. Check it out: http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html This will help you fix a lot of the problems you are having with your mixes. I've witnessed this first hand: a friend applied a lot of these...

can anyone comment on these tape heads?

When I bought my 22-2, the heads looked worse. After cleaning off all the sticky shed, they looked immaculate. That crap makes heads look more worn then they really are. I'd say you should be fine after a cleanup.

does it matter which preamp you use w/ analog?

It doesn't matter if you're using digital or analog... a good quality preamp makes a big difference in either medium. I recently switched from using a Mackie 1604 with XDR preamps to an old Studiomaster board... the difference was astounding. "So that's where all my high end was hiding," I...

It's enough to get me started. Thanks! BTW, I'm in the middle of scanning those manuals. Hopefully I'll be done soon...

    Getting a Teac 3340S!!

I forgot to mention that the red record light on track 4 didn't light up either. I mention it because it could be a clue... Any thoughts on the stuck pinch roller? I have to push it up to play and record, push it down when using fast forward or rewind. Sometimes it moves on its own, sometimes...

    Getting a Teac 3340S!!

Still nothing on track 4. I tried the line input last night. Like the mic input, no go. That's next on my list. Thanks guys. :)

    Getting a Teac 3340S!!

Thanks guys, I got an appliance cord to work. I've checked out the machine. I cleaned and demagged it. I was able to record on every track but #4. Also, when playing back a 2-track tape in 4-track mode, I could listen through outputs 1-3 only. What are the most common causes of this? Also...

    Getting a Teac 3340S!!

Nah. Actually, I tried this last night. Maybe I just need to cut it down more. I think one of the prongs is too small, so I may have to enlarge that too. :)

    Getting a Teac 3340S!!

Thanks Herm. I sent him an email. Somebody told me that a vacuum cleaner cable should work. Any truth to that?

    Getting a Teac 3340S!!

Shit... I don't have a power cable. I checked for something at Lowes and Home Depot, but couldn't find anything like it. Is this proprietary, or can I find a cable somewhere?
