I'd guess the lack of bass is because there is no way to fit big enough output capacitors in that package. I've used my 3rd gen iPod as a test tone generator, and it's dead flat from 20 to 20K Hz into a line level load. But I haven't tried to measure it with 'phones attached.

I picked up LE 8 a few weeks ago to record my band. I'm pretty happy with it for that purpose. Seems like a lot of capabilities for the price. Strangely, I like the Apple reverb AU plug better than the ones that came with LE.

Oh yeah, the small Mackie mixers have an alternate bus out that I used for recording with a 2-channel interface.

That's not what channel inserts are intended for, but it is a common use for them. Common enough you can find the adapter cables to do it at Guitar Center!

All current Macs use Intel Core 2 CPUs, so they can all run Windows. The difference between the MacBook and the Pro is the Pro has a bigger screen, a real graphics chip, and an ExpressCard port (PCIe) for high performance interfaces. The MacBook only has USB 2 and FireWire 400 ports. A MacBook...

Did you look at the System Preferences -> Sound control panel? How about the Audio Midi Setup app? It's in the Utilities folder under Applications.

You say your disk I/O meter is staying low. It's probably OK to track to the internal drive if this is the case. I prefer to go external because you never know when the OS is going to use the internal drive for other applications or paging in/out parts of Logic itself. Extra RAM reduces, but...
