It's good to hear this story. I've been thinking about getting a MidiIzer and a TSR-8 to hang off the back of my 688, but maybe it wouldn't be such a good idea after all. I'm loving the 688 but I want more tracks :(
The two of them side by side looks awesome. I had no idea the midiIzer was...
I recently got a 688. I must say that the computer (where all routing is done) is kind of a PITA, and the mixer is pretty noisy on mine, but in general it sounds absolutely great.
It by far, and i mean FAR, exceeded all of my expectations when it comes to the recording quality. I really...
i've recorded here.
it's f*@!(n awesome
EDIT: I'm actually confusing this studio with another that's run by someone else within the same bunch of people.
I recorded in a little sample of the left channel versus the right. Keep in mind that this machine has not been touched in probably over 10 years so it definitely needs bias'd, aligned, etc... along with any other tune-up/clean-up.
Here is a zip file containing a sample recording from a song...
The 911 seems to be running just fine. I de-mag'd everything and it didn't seem to change a thing. I don't have any deoxit so I've got to find some. I'm hoping that may solve this.
The machine is so damn "like new" but has been sitting in storage for the last ten years. I have a feeling...
The transport seems to be running well. The machine packs tape way better than my E16 does. The tape is also brand new RMGi 911.
I've never demagged before, but I'll follow the directions I've got.
I feel like this machine was a pretty good deal.
$150 included the machine, a han-d-mag, and...
The deox was the first thing I thought of. I should go get some. There was no overloading going on.
Thanks for those tips, I'm going to try to get to it today.

I just picked up a nice condition Fostex Model 20 today. I'm hearing some "crackling" on channel 1 when I playback a recording. Its dynamics/loudness follows the dynamics of the recording --> loud deep electronic kick drums for example.
Any ideas on what this may be?
So I just confirmed that it is actually 1/4". I guess I stupidly assumed 1/2". Either way....
I don't know if it's gonna be worth all the hassle of trying to get the thing to fit in a rack, though I am using a full depth server rack with a 4-point mounted shelf. It's just that the shelf is...
The body of the Otari looks exactly the same as the 8 track 1/2" that lays flat. I hate how the model #'s go with the Otaris- I never know which machine is which until seeing a picture.
After seeing it from the back and sides, I don't think it's rack mountable at all, unless it were to lay...
So it's now between an RS-1500 and an Otari 1/2" 2track that just became available.
Any idea if the 5050 1/2" is rackmountable? I'm so sadly starved for space.
