Hey dude,

I know this is a long time after you posted, but did you ever find out what the problem was? I also have an 8 track 488 that was stored in the basement for a few years. I brought it up, changed the belt, and put in some tapes that I recorded only to discover that track 8 will not work anymore.

cool, seems like common sense half the time people forget what they are trying to do...
