i think it depends on what mpc model...I think the 4000 you run it staright in....i use a 3000 and I run it in a mixer wich amplifies the sound and then into the mp You dont need a dj mixer..any mixer will do...a lil cheapo or whatever

It's funny you say this because by the time you turn your computer on and load up your program..I'd already have the drums going and working on a melody...My mpc for example i had it painted candy red and i have custom wood sides..but i dont have no letters or numbers near any of the functions...

If you wanna use software you dont need a hardware sequencer. All you need is a midi keyboard,and software like reason or fruity loops.these have their own sequencers and samplers on the software.Their are other things as far as software,but those options I mentioned are perfect for your situation.
