I'm looking at one of these to use as a mixer to do submixes of my synths etc down to my 388s 8 channels. Been eyeing these boards off for a while and one has come up.
Are they pretty similar to the 388 in sound?
Hey,
So Channel 7 records quiet. Tested on another 388 and the playback is the same. But playback of a good tape sounds fine on the problematic 388.
I swapped REC play cards 4-7, 6-8 cards and hit the connectors with some deoxit & recorded some test tones across all tracks on the AU388...
yeah here's a mouser BOM i got from Browner Sound for a full recap IN 2020 but never got around to it. 2 caps are now unattainable, so if you find replacements, let me know and i'll update the BOM

In thinking about this stuff myself, I put it down to me wanting to preserve methods of doing something that I find vital to my core being. So like, 4 tracks signify a huge change for the better in my life, in around 1993, discovering Ween and diving into the world of home recording. It...
Sorry, meaning that with DBX off it’s the same distorted sound, with it engaged the signal gets even quieter.
Didn’t get the left one out yet, but will swap them tonight!
Removed the Right side DBX card & cleaned it up, put it back in and gave it a good wiggle and no change.
Recording direct on the BUSS IN for 2 & 7 is a slight level improvement, but still noisy & thin.
So it seems like it's related to the DBX card, which I would have never figured! I can...
Ok so I tried recording with DBX on and off. Off is as above, on the signal basically disappears. I’ve wiggled the DBX cards but will remove them and give them a clean. Do they pull out like the PLAY/REC PCBs? They’re pretty stiff if so, so I’m taking my time.
EQ cards, the cards with the channel select & EQs on them you get at from the bottom, connected to the BUS PCB.
Haven’t touched the DBX cards, will try. And the BUSS IN jacks will try tonight.
I posted this on the Tascam forum but reckon it’s get more eyes here.
Anyway, Classic stuff, but it's been a while since i've been under the hood on the 388 and no other posts address the exact sitation.
So Channel 2 & 7 are recording kinda thin, distorted & quiet but playing back...
Thanks for this Rob! Refreshing to hear in relation to being told to get a vintage oscilliscope of which most seem broken or quite expensive in Australia. Any idea how how it goes in the low Mv range? Would it read cleanly from 50-150?
Just tried bouncing from a good track to tracks 2 & 7 and they still recorded distorted with low level.
I've attached a few photos of the heads, i'm not really too sure what i'm looking for with head wear, so if anyone can let me know how these look, i'm interested to learn what head wear...
Ok swapped 1 & 2 EQ cards and 2 is the same.
Also tested the recorded test tone from 2 & on the TAPE OUT and still thin and quiet. I know i've read about this a few times, but can't find anything specific.
Classic stuff, but it's been a while since i've been under the hood. Channel 2 & 7 are recording kinda thin & quiet but playing back prerecorded stuff properly. Here's what i've done.
- Cleaned the heads.
- swapped the REC/PLAY pcbs with the working pairs.
last year cleaned the BUSS...
