  • Hi,

Apologies for the delay in replying but the board didn't send me an email to tell me I had a message!

Anyway, the 2488 accepts both balanced and unbalanced signals so you do not need to worry about using the latter type of cable. The only thing you must not do is plug an unbalanced cable into inputs A-D when phantom power is engaged as this will fry the mic (and probably the 2488).

As you say, balanced connections are less susceptible to noise from things like mains and RFI and this is why most people choose them however I have often used an unbalanced cable to connect things like the kick drum mic without any problems

    Hope that clears things up

Hey- thanks for your reply on my last post...you seem very smart and was hoping you may have an answer to my latest post...

'alright, I have 4 drum mics which I plug into the 4 XLR inputs on the 2488. I have four other (fairly cheap) dynamic mics. I have no cables for those mics, because the only four XLR cables go to the drum mics. So, because the 2488 only has 4 XLR inputs, I'm getting some mic cables that are XLR - 1/4inch. I am really not good with the electronic side of things...but these mics cables are unbalanced. I read that for longer cables, itd be better to have balanced mic cables, because of the elminiation of noise and such...but these are just 10 foot mic cables that shouldnt pick up too much noise... my question is, are these cable going to be okay for plugging into the 1/4inch inputs on the 2488? I'm not expecting crystal clear sound... I just dont want to hurt the mixer. Thanks'

I'm sorry for asking the question directly and everything and if you dont know the answer than thats fine. I'm just kind of pressed for time on this one and noticed you were online...thanks!
