you'll love the acmp-73 from jay. i bought the pair of 81's from him and although he had advertised that they didn't have the hum from the eq circuit, they did; but he ended up sending me the transistors to swap in the Q4 and Q5 positions and this cleared up 90% of it. rotating and shielding the toroid, shielding the inductors made one totally quiet, while one was quieted down, but not completely quiet. both are definitely usable now. the preamps in these boxes are an incredible value! i started out with a "broken" 73 and 84, fixed both, and now i am hooked! hence why i will have a pair of all 3. if this is your first TNC(especially the 73 or 84. the 73 is the least problematic of all 3), you will be very happy.
