Space Between Panel and Wall

Good day all!

What's the reason why an acoustic panel should be hung a couple inches off the wall?

Does the sound diffuse more with the space in-between?

I'm going to do it that way because it's recommended and looks cool, but was curious as to the science behind it.

Google it man. There is much information about this. Increasing the surface area/air gap between the wall and treatment (even the same with isolation though density of the walls outside of the air gap are more important) improves the performance of the materials used.
