Are RC8 resilient channels strong enough for a ceiling job?

I bought a batch of RC8 resilient channels from Auralex.
I plan using them using to treat a ceiling as follows (from top to bottom):

joists (mineral fiber in between joists)
-----
RC8 (perpendicular to joists)
----
5/8 drywall (screwed only to RC8)
----
Auralex MLV -- sheetblock
----
5/8 drywall (at 90 deg from 1st layer, screwed through first layer, attaching only to RC8)

My contractor is happy undoing this, but has some reluctance regarding the sturdiness of the RC8s.
He thinks they look flimsy for 2 layers of 5/8 drywall plus vinyl.

We plan on placing the RC8s at 12" intervals OC.

Do you have any experience with this and do you think that although the RC8s in fact look flimsy, they can hold such a load for a ceiling?

From the Auralex website, this stuff is supposed to be used for walls. I'd contact Auralex directly and ask them if I were you.

thanks mjbphotos, but check this out (from the Auralex website)

"RC-8 should be installed horizontally at the bottom and top of your wall, then every 2′ or less in between. Up to (2) layers of 5/8″ drywall and a layer of SheetBlok may be hung on RC-8, even on a ceiling."

So yes, they say it's OK, but I was wondering if others here have used them and how they feel about their sturdiness.
