OC703 Equivilents

Are any of you guys familiar with the Knauf or Johns Manville rigid fiberglass products? I'm comparing the sound absorption coefficients from each of the product data pages...

All of them have similar density products with similar sound absorption data- OC703 is 3pcf. The JM and Knauf products seem to be less effective between 250 and 500.

I found a local dealer willing to order small quantities, and even better, he said they'd get get most stuff within a couple days... I haven't got costs on any of them yet. when he said it might be easier to get JM, I thought I'd look it up first. I know they stock the Roxul rockwool.

The Johns Manville stuff actually looks like the best performer. The question is,are there any other considerations other than the sound absorption that I'm missing?

I've used the Roxul stuff extensively when I originally treated my basement "studio" about 6 years ago. So, I know that stuff works. I also used some OC703 that I came across, and that seemed easier to work with.

I'll be using this for the standard corner traps and wall panels.

Any input from the local pro's would be awesome. I'd love to make my order tomorrow so I can try and get this stuff by the weekend. :D

Ok, damn, that was alot of info... Lets try this...

Here is the summary of 2" 3pcf sound absorption coefficients for the 4 materials (except the rockwool- thats the heavier stuff). I'm not so much looking to split hairs on what works slightly better, but really I'd like to determine that they're comparable so that I (and others viewing) can weigh whats availible with what actually works. So anyway, my real question- I can read the table, but is there some other data or info or consideration that I need to consider...

I've got a post somewhere in the Studio Build forum where I compare JM to OC. I like the JM rigid fibreboard better because the fiberglass is made up of strands held together with resin. Not chopped up then bonded like OC703. I find the JM boards to be more durable. The OC703 is kind of crumbly and I had problems when covering with fabric. I used spray-on adhesive and if I had to reposition it, more often that not, a large clump of the board would break away. This wouldn't happen with the JM stuff. I also think the JM would work better with different walls fasteners. I used carpet tack strips and haven't had a prblem with the JM stuff. A couple of the OC703 panels have fallen down.

i have not done any comparison with sound absorption, so what you posted is very interesting. I kind of figured they would be closely matched bcause of the density and thickness. Thanks for confirming.

Thanks for the feedback Chili. I'll see if I can find that thread. Do you recall how long ago that was?

I think I'll call for pricing and ETA on the 703 and the Johns Manville this morning...

I'm so lazy, I should have done this for you in my first reply.

Scroll most of the way down.

I'd be interested in what you get for prices. I can't remember what I paid for the JM panels, exactly.

Thanks!!

Ok, the Johns Manville had a minimum order....

So I stuck with the tried and true OC703. 4" panels, (6) in a box for $60.27. That's about $1.25 / s.f.
It should be here in a week...

If anyone nearby is interested, that's from NexGen Building Supply in Cincinnati, OH.

Sonofa... the NexGen guy just called me back to give me good news and bad news... Bad news- he mis-quoted me. Instead of $60 its $107, so $2.20/s.f.
The good news, he can have it here tomorrow and I just happen to be on vacation tomorrow so I'll be able to install it. :)

That's still not a bad price at all for 4" 703.

Yeah, he said he accidentally calculated using only half the area that comes in a bag, so he said really it should have been $120... Then I think he felt bad, so he hooked me up a little. Oh well- fingers crossed that it shows up so I can use it tomorrow on my vacation day.
