Low sound from monitors

Hi guys, I'm using a alesis multimix 8 USB brought what connectors I believe I need to have my MacBook Pro running through a second screen and the mixer but for some reason my monitors have a rubbish signal or clip at low volume, I have tried putting a preamp into the circuit and that didn't help any other ideas???

What monitors are you using?

What did you plug the monitors into?

How is the sound getting from the laptop into the mixer? (USB or ...)

How are the levels set on the mixer?

When you tried to turn up the monitor level, what level control were you using?
