active vs passive monitors

I have a small home studio with an AKAI DPS16 multitrack, a MAC G3, various electric and acoustic instruments and some Alesis M1 Active monitors. I have everything plugged into the AKAI and for now am listenting to everything via the AKAI and M1 powered monitors.

My problem is that I don't have enough volume or tonal control for the system and feel that I need a mixer and/or an amplifer. I have to constantly unplug everything to patch from here to there, which means that the studio is in a constant state of upheaval...new wires here, more adapters and different cables...it's making me crazy. I also want to save the wear and tear on the DPS16 by not alwayse using it as a mixer or patch bay.

I need some advice. I think I should take back the Alesis M1 Actives and get a mixer and some passive monitors for more versatility and connectivity with the overall system. I already have a Hafler 150 watt (2x75) amplifier that is NOT being used.

Any recommendations for equipment setups would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
