first of all I've called all around and no one has anything good in Utah. A local insul shop does have this roxul acoustical batts at 40 density.

if I use it, I think I understand that I must make it thick, like 6 or 8''. is that right?

also is it true that the less dense stuff would make a good ceiling cloud?
I'm thinking about taking down the gik 244's, putting them on the walls and putting this roxul up there. good idea?

Yep, that'll work well actually. I would make them thicker...4"-8". If it's easy to make the swap, then a 4" absorber made with 40kg insulation would work great on the ceiling.
