Clouds Will Fall (original track) work in progress

Hi, The wife suggested I do a dance kind of thing. I'm more your raw lyrics kind of writer and usually accompany those lyrics with something noisy and dark. However against my better judgement I thought I'd give it a go.

I'm not sure about the composition of this hence my posting of the track, all feedback welcome.

    Thanks

    Tim

    It works.
Terry & I used to record against a rock bossanova in the mid 80's just to break out of our shells a bit.
    The song's quite good.
I think you need something on the drums to make them dancier - the rhythm's fine just the sound - I'd suggest downloading the Fish Fillets free VST pack from the net & use the Blockfish effect enclosed. Specifically Fat Drum Loop - it's a compressor that colours as well.
You still managed to hold onto some Bleak Blake in your lyric. Good!
Emphasising the bleep bloops a little more would suit the genre as well.
    keep at it!

Always got have some bleak blake Ray, I'll look into the plug ins, I have to confess that I am not a big user of the PC in my music production. I have Cubebase and a couple of other pieces of software on the PC, don't get me wrong I'm very computer savvy but I like dials and knobs that I can physically twist or slide. I appreciate I may be excluding myself from some great options but there is something satisfying about about actually making the sounds and manipulating the hardware or instrument to achieve the content of my tracks. The bleep bloops are me on the guitar with a serious amount delay ect, not my usual application for a guitar but one has to experiment. Everything vocally on the track was done by using a number of tracks to layer some sections, I could have really created a massive vocal wall of sound had there seemed to be a need for it, but sometimes the right amount is just shy of getting carried away. I will most certainly have a tinker with the drum track as I did paste that together on the PC and have the original jigsaw saved, so plenty of options available with it. I have a guitar orientated itch after doing this track, I had to play for a couple for hours late last night in an effort to decontaminate myself after working with something that's a little alien to me.

As always your time and thoughts are appreciated.

    all the best

Thanks for listening nyckylim, I'm always very self critical of my music and how it's recorded and learn something every time I work on a new track. I think I still have a lot to learn and this is a great place to pick up ideas and be brought back to earth by those with more experience. Recording and working with takes, mixing and so on, is a big part of the learning curve, but listening and actually hearing what makes the work of others have that wow factor on the very first listen is an extremely valuable exercise too. All the best with your recording.

    Thanks

Very nice recording and song as usual, Tim. A strong Pink Floyd influence is heard, with maybe a touch of the Rolling Stones in the lyrics/melody. Clever stuff, my friend!

    Cheers,
    Joseph

Thanks for listening Joseph, I hope all is good with you and yours. I'm still finding my groove musically, in so much as I find myself trying different styles with no fixed agenda, hence the mish-mash of influences coming through. I enjoyed doing this track, although to be fair, when wife suggested using a more disco type of drum track I have to say I was a little cynical until I got the bass line added, at which point I got the bit between my teeth as the melody options started becoming apparent. The guitar sound is one of those toys that sits in the box and looks pretty but is often left unused for the lack of an application for it, so it was fun using it here. I enjoy lyric writing, so once I had the bare bones running the song pretty much wrote itself.

    All the best my friend,

You have a potentially excellent assistant. Keep her on the good path!

She's a natural Ray, only been playing piano for around seven months, she sight reads and has perfect pitch. She can also copy guitar licks, parrot fashion on her nylon strung which is somewhat annoying. Glockenspiel and a range of percussion, and harmonica are also on her menu so I'm looking forward to doing some interesting tracks in the years to come.

I hope all is good with you, I have friends over later and I'm having to cook big time while the wife is at work so no recording today.

    all the best
