when can i use each of the following conducting patterns?

I had no idea the swoop of your hand from position to position actually mattered.

FWIW, the way I instinctively move my hands doesn't look like either of those.

Those two patterns are exactly the same; the one on the right simply shows a bit more -- or, arguably, too much -- detail about how your hand changes direction.

But, for the sake of not coming across too snarky, I'll offer this: The one on the left would lend itself to brisker tempos, the one on the right to slower, more relaxed (possibly even rubato) tempos.

But they really are the same thing in the grand scheme of conducting patterns.

Yes I think they're basically the same thing. I was taught the one on the right. In other words, the actual 4th "beat" occurs at the bottom, and then your hand rebounds up to the high point before coming down for beat 1.
