Bernstein demonstrates music's evolution

Interesting. How accurate is the history of that?
Were intervals really not used in western music until the 10th century? I thought we didn't even have written music until something like the 15th?
 
He's kind of pseudo-scientific throughout the full lecture so I wouldn't take it to the letter. I remember doing a research project on medieval music though and finding that while composers of the time were aware of the tritone, they said it should be avoided. That might make sense given that they were using (I think) just intonation, it might not have sounded any good.
