Searching for a mystery vocal effect? HELP!

Listen to "I Should Have Known" by Foo Fighters, listen to the thick, distorted vocals throughout but in particular the beginning, I just love it!
Is there a certain effect Butch used to achieve that sick sound or is it plain distortion and reverb?
I just think it's pure awesome and I want my vocal tracks sounding like that!

It has a sort of hazy sound to it like a mild phaser effect but I'm not sure!

Sounds like straight analogue distortion to me like overdriving a preamp or the channel on a console. Another trick you can try is to put a guitar amp sim on the insert of your vocal track, this will give you a hellish distortion and you'll have control over it. Good luck.

When I was engineering the session for the Foo Fighters that day, we accidently ripped the speaker cone on a NS10 and thought it sounded cool with the vocals. We set up a U47 in front of the ripped cone and recorded it through the board using a touch of low mid boost and heavily compressed the track to get it to sit right in the mix. I have pics somewhere on my laptop unfortunately the upload function is not working at the moment.

oh yeah that was just a dream I had last night
