Can I truly sing or not?

The link is below... I just want you to be brutally honest! Yes, the video screen is black lol... but you will just hear my voice. I just want to know the truth because some people say I can't sing then some say I do. If I can maybe I'll take voice lessons in the future and if I can't I can just continue to sing to myself. lol maybe you can even tell me what category I fit into like if I would be tenor or alto or something.

Welcome to the board. your pitch needs some work, it's all over the place. The tone is not that bad. lessons could help but if you enjoy doing it go for it.

Hey.....you can use some lessons but keep at it. And........you really need music to sing to to understand how to proceed...........get some and sing along. We're all great in the shower. And all (well most) of our relatives are nice enough to..........well..........lie to us if needed. Platy some music..........sing along.........ask yourself how it sounds. Good luck to you.

Everyone can sing. Your question is, is my singing good enough for others to want to listen too?

Your singing is good enough for others to probably want to hear. You can hold a tune, good vocal, wasn't bad.

Now, singing without music is hard as heck. I wouldn't even try, that is for the special 1% and they really train. As others have stated, get some good karaoke or background music, nice little interface (two channel USB interface, $100-150, decent mic) grab some software and sing, listen and adjust do it again. Maybe if you can, find someone who can coach and teach.

You have the basics, now the question is, what is the best way to proceed. Coach will help you get better faster, but you do have to do it a lot and be able to hear yourself back and make adjustments as required. You will also find an area/range that you do the best.

Hope this helps.

I would say your singing is pretty good.

And to be honest, I don’t think there are many people who can judge people's singing ability. Atleast when it is not so obvious like most of the cases. I know a lot of stories where people were told they should stop singing and they went on to become legends . This all too common in sports too. Likewise, there are people show great talent, but just disappeared. I know in India, probably the greatest singer (we call him the voice of God) was told he do not have a good voice to be a singer by the All India radio when he went there to sing for the fist time!

And most people can't tell the difference if it is the singer or the mixing and mic and such. And those are the people who actually make you a singer. The people who can tell the difference and give all the technical details don’t have much of a say.

As someone wrote, get a mic, interface and a backing track and sing. Sometimes it is easy to sing when you have music and rhythm in the background.

I didn't post for awhile... but I wanted you to actually judge this song for me as well. I just wanted to try and do a little better... I'm really serious about taking singing lessons.

Then take singing lessons and stop posting black YouTube clips of your breathless warbling. Come back after you've had some lessons and have learnt some pitch and breath control. If you can't hear that you have pitch problems, how will you correct them?

You can pay someone to give you positive feedback in person - singing teachers are good like that. :thumbs up:

Yes! you can. You have a whole hell of a lot more talent than me when I started to sing. Here's proof, then- https://app.box.com/shared/m6jknp94wc and now- https://app.box.com/s/2wkuwp4u4tc8ok05obwd. 7 years of vocal training did this for me and you are light years ahead of where I was, so it would not nearly take you that long to master your voice!

Lessons would definitely do you some good. You seem to hold back while singing, don't be afraid to let out more volume. Overall you have a pleasant tone and decent pitch accuracy which would only improve with lessons.

However not all vocal coaches are created equal. Some are definitely better than others. Here is a video I made on what to look for in a good vocal coach- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0wblnYrgnc

Yes you can sing. Singing acapella is kinda hard, you can't really hold the pitch but I bet you can do it better with an instrumental playback. You have a really nice tone I must say. ;)
Keep it up!

If that's all the power you have in your voice then, no, you can't sing. Yet anyway. I agree with most of the others. You have a nice sounding voice but don't know how to use it. Which is like saying you own nice guitar or piano but have never taken lessons. I don't agree that "everyone can learn" to sing. If you don't at least have an ear for pitch you're out of luck. Fortunately for you, it sounds like you have more of a lack of confidence than a problem hearing pitch. I think you'll find that once you stop trying so hard you'll sound much better. Look up vocal exercises on YouTube. Do warm up exercises loud, soft, high, low, and everything else. You'll quickly find out what you can and can't do. After that it's just a matter of using the tools you were born with. Don't try to sound like anyone else and just improve on what you are capable of. I've always found that singing without music was much easier than with, don't know where everyone is getting the whole backing track thing. It'll only hide your mistakes and make you think you sound better than you do.

The link is below... I just want you to be brutally honest!

I'm not brutal at all. But if you don't know if you can sing, then basically you can't sing well. If you need other people to tell you whether you can sing, then basically you can't sing very well. Real singers know they're singing - they don't need other people to tell them they're singing.

And if you were listening to a backing track while you were recording that, then you seriously pitchy.

Okay, this is an old post, and I still haven't listened to the posted sample. (Me spanks me's self.) :spank: And the only reason I'm posting a response now is because somebody else did, so the thread showed up under "New Posts." Plus-- and most importantly/tellingly-- I've been drinking beer, so my thought processes are currently impaired. (True story!)

(1) You can sing.

(2) You can truly sing.

(3) You can sing truly.

But what really matters is

(1) Do you want to sing?

(2) Do you truly want to sing?

(3) Do you want to truly sing?

(4) Do you want to sing truly?

(5) Do you truly want to truly sing truly?

(6) Do you... oh, crud, I've run out of permutations!

The thing is, if you truly love to sing, then you should sing-- and damn the torpedoes (as well as anyone who sticks their fingers in their ears while you're singing).

It's like Barry Manilow. I never cared for his songs when I was growing up-- I was much too "cool" for them, plus a bunch of older people (especially my parents) liked his songs, which was all I needed to know to dang him to heck. But what I remember the most about him was that when he hit it big and all the TV talk shows started talking about him, one of the things they said was that while he was writing his songs and playing the piano and singing, all of his neighbors were complaining about the noise he was making.

So to heck with what your neighbors and everyone on this site may say. Do you love to sing? When you sing, do you reach deep inside your soul and express vocally what you've found there? If yes, then by all means, sing.

Will other people want to listen to your singing? Who cares; you're singing from your soul, so it doesn't matter what others think! Anyway, "genius" is often unappreciated until several generations after the fact. (I'm not suggesting that your singing is "genius," mind you; I'm just sayin'.)

Sure, you're a frail human being trying to make his or her way through the Big Bad World and find a way to put food in your mouth and keep a roof over your head, not to mention how to keep the IRS from fining you and charging you interest for not having any health insurance and stuff. But in the final analysis, if singing is something that you truly love to do, and if you truly sing from your heart, then sing your heart out.

Commercialism is oh-so-important these days, as well as in days gone by. After all, what good is it to sing (or dance, or write poems, or build buildings, or cook meals, or whatever) if no one is willing to pay/feed/house/support you? So yes, you care about whether other people think you can sing. But you shouldn't. You should just sing, and truly sing, and sing truly. You might die of starvation, or exposure to the elements, or get eaten by the IRS-- I mean, by a T-Rex-- but at least you will have died doing what you love. Is there any better way to die?

Can you sing? Yes How do you sound? Good a little shake in your voice think thats nerves.. its def there in you. your runs struggle a bit thats def a confidence thing to me... practice those runs alone and burst them out emotionally confidently... reach down your have potential. scale of 1 to 10 now... 1 being Yoko Ono (although I admire your tenacity and crazienss) and 10 being IDK Adele Christina, mariah, usher, michael buble!! (to name a few possible) I would say you are at a 6 with potential to really get to where ever your heart can reach. You can sing. You need! CONFIDENT. PRACTICE

There are some pitch issues here and there. But I think there are other things you should work on first, as they may help a lot with any pitch issues you are having.

Breath control is a big one. So is evening out some of your vibrato. Better breath control should help you control your vibrato.

Also, your runs. This is a problem with a lot of people, but remember, every single note in a run is separate, and needs to be treated as such. A couple off pitch notes with ruin a whole run.

All in all, I think you have lots of potential. Just practice, and keep learning :-)

Start recording yourself at home, and listen to it. Be brutally honest with yourself. If you aren't nailing a run, practice until you do nail it.

Record your vocal exercises with the goal that you are always on pitch.

Your vocal chords are a muscle, they need to be trained. I think you have an ear for it, you just need some of the training now.

Here is the challenge for singers: It is just too easy to try and sound like someone else. And let's face it: it is the lazy way out and as long as you are trying to emulate whomever, you are going to always be bumping your head on the studio version of those who judge you.

Back to basics: HAUL OFF AND SING IT! Don't try to be cute, adorable or clever....just belt it out! Find yourself some music that might not naturally appeal to "your style" and listen to it. Maybe some old Broadway and believe me, you won't find any bashful singing in Broadway. You have a good voice but it is trapped inside of what you think you want to sound like. Find your style, don't listen to what appeals to you. Sing music that is out of your comfort zone. Get you a copy of something like "Jesus Christ Superstar" and try singing every part in it!

Sometimes you just have to jump into the volcano as a vocalist!

Build yourself. Invest time in yourself. Establish yourself. You are the only tool you have in your hand.

From around 2:30 - 2:50 it gets quite pitchy. I don't know if it's because you're holding back or if your voice is meant for lower notes. Aside from that, the sound of your voice and your singing was certainly not bad, just needs to be polished is all :D

You've gotta be kidding me, that's you in both links?!? I must admit I was scared after hearing what you sounded like 7 years ago, but (while obviously the music helps) your voice is LIGHTYEARS ahead of where it was! Where did you take vocal lessons? Tell me now!!
