Software drum machines are indeed the way to go. They allow you to use your own drum wav. files as the kick, snare and hi-hat. Programing is simple and the results are quite good. After you have programed your drum pattern you then render it as a stereo wav. file that can be used in any digital audio sequencer or 2-trk editor. The current crop of virtual drum machines are Fruity Loops Pro, Steinberg's B-Box and Rebirth, Drum Station and Hammer Head. If money is a problem I suggest downloading Hammer Head it's free and has many good features. If you need sounds check out Wave Loop sample Cd. It has hundreds of kicks and snare to choose from and they are afordable. Hope this helps you out...
