Recording a song with tempo changes

I'm recording a band Saturday and the song they will record has some tempo changes. How do I handle this with the metronome? I know you can insert markers to change the bpm but it's a huge hassle because I have to now exactly how many bars until the change. Is this the only way to do it? How do you guys approach this? Does anyone do separate takes for different tempoed parts of the song? Thanks!

What are you using to record with?? If you're using a DAW like Cubase, protools, Sonar, etc, then yes, you have to know at what measure the tempo changes happen. It's not a lot of work to figure out. Just count.

If you're not using a DAW, then you change your metronome at the point when you need to....

My only real experience is with Cubase, so I have to figure out what measure to change the tempo and mark it on the tempo track.

I record a scratch track at the intitial bpm rate, then go back and set up markers at the tempo change locations, add the changes, then re-record the scratch track to the new adjusted tempo.
