i recorded drums today for the first time. everything sounded great except the snair sounded really high and snappy.. when i listen to other bands it sounds not nearly as noticable or snappy. i used 1 sm57. any suggestions on what i should do? use mroe than one mic? or what?

thanks!

Are you just listening to the drums in isolation?

I find when you add bass, guitars, vocals etc, a snappy snare can cut through quite well.

If you still don't like it, try moving your mic around a little. Point it at the rim of the snare instead of the centre.

You can also use eq to get closer to the sound you're after

First make sure the snare is tuned and how you want it to sound (somtimes things translate differently when they are recorded).

If the mic is directed at the bottom of the snare this can cause it to be overly snappy or ricey, which somtimes i do depending how i want it to cut thru the mix.

But normally i direct it to the top rim couple inches back.
