Mackie mixer preamps vs stand alone preamps (for vocals)

Hi all

So .... I have a Mackie 820i mixer. I really have no complaints with the built-in pre-amps on the Mackie mixer, but then again, I don't have any real comparison.

I have a RODE NT2a microphone that works just fine with the built-in Mackie pre-amps, but I have been wondering if a stand alone pre-amp might yield better results. This pertains to vocals only.

My question then is, who uses a Mackie 820i and is completely satisfied with the built-in pre-amps (with whatever mic you're using) vs who uses a Mackie 820i with a stand alone pre-amp? What is the pre-amp you use, and why? and/or is there a pre-amp that anyone might recommend with this particular mic/mixer combination (RODE NT2a and an 820i)?

Thanks.
