I'm considering these Sound Skulptor DIY 500 series. They get good reviews. For the same price as one pre-built, you could acquire several and assemble you own. After the MP566 pre, the Tape simulator looks cool, or comp, etc. whatever.
If tracking with several units, you would connect mic first to preamp, then XLR out to XLR in of additional processor in back of lunchbox and so on. If using a comp, I'd guess that should be last in the chain. Sounds like an idiot question after writing it out, just need to be clear on the basics.
