How does MIDI work?

i just have a bunch of questions about mIDI

i know you first need a soundcard that can do midi, such as the audiophile 2496.

and i know you need a "controller", like a keyboard basically.

so you hook up the midi out of the controller to the midi in on your soundcard, and that's all the connections you need to make, right?

after that, i'm utterly confused.

how do you "record" midi? do you need a special program to do it? a sequencer of some sorts? i use cool edit pro, and i know it doesn't have midi capabilites.

how would i "record" it so that i could use it in cool edit pro?

would i need to use a program like cubase to utilize midi?

after you sequence everything, then do you convert it into a wav. file? or is that even possible?

could i record the midi in another program, while tracking with cool edit pro? like have cool edit playing the drums and guitar, and play over it on a different program? and then convert to wav and dump it in cool edit?

oog....

thanks :D
