how do I use sonar compression/limiting/gate

I have a hiss, it is an awful hiss, and my basic intuition is not enough to understand the different features of my sonar 1.0 compression/limiting/expanding/gating effects. Will these suffice to clean up my recordings or do I need a compr/lim/etc... before my behringer mixer?

Some hiss is unavoidable but if you have a lot of hiss it is probably a gain staging issue. Do a search on 'gain stage' and read up.

Gating will help eliminate hiss when there is no music on the track but if it's really loud then your screwed. Your best is seeing if you can minimize it during tracking and redo the parts. X
