Ez drummer loudness

How comes when I have ez drummer track set at unity along with my own recorded tracks does it sound so much louder, even without any type of processing etc

I noticed that each drum hit averages a lot louder than the typical -18dbfs that is used as the standard for gain staging.

I'm guessing they tracked/recorded hotter as it would sound 'better'

Any ideas

Dave,

My understanding is that with recording analog sources (vox into mic, guitar into preamp, physical synth into preamp, ect) is when you strive for that -18db. Because EZ Drummer is a virtual or digital source, it can have optimal sounds recorded above this allowing the user more control over where they want the level at. Hopefully someone more experienced can chime in.

I would go for peaks somewhere below -6 dB on your DAW's meters when setting your drum levels. The -18 dB is more of a guideline for RMS, or average levels. If your overall mix is riding around -18 dB RMS and you're peaking at or under -6 dB, then you'll be in great shape.
