Can someone tell me what this vocal effect is?

A second voice comes in with distortion on both.

Do you think it's EQ'd aggressively? It sounds very thin but in a pleasing/interesting way. The distortion is also nice sounding -- do you think that's run through a pedal instead of applied after the fact?

It could be run through a pedal, sent through a guitar amp and miced, sent through a distortion plugin, amp simulator, or they could have just cranked the mic preamp way up and attenuated it farther down the chain.

id you use and amp/amp sim, you will get that thing where it's all midrange. It just sort of happens.

It's Jack White we're talking about here so I don't think you can rule anything out. He could be using some cheap mic or something that's easy to overload. He's known for overloading all kinds of effects that you wouldn't normally think of as distortion boxes. He could be slamming the input levels to tape.

If you've ever seen "It Might Get Loud", it gives you a bit of insight into his techniques. Not the most orthodox guy.
